Sir Ken Robinson gives commencement speech at RISD

Many of you may have seen this on Core77, but if you haven't done so yet, check out this video. British author Ken Robinson spoke at the Rhode Island School of Design's commencement this year, and delivered what I thought was a truly inspiring speech. It's a bit long, but stick through the first 2-3 minutes of introductions and watch his address, you won't regret it - it might just be enough to keep your head up for another day through your job search!

INSPIRED! A new model for haircut efficiency!

Amazing Image Archive from NASA

The Horsehead Nebula - courtesy of nasaimages.org

The above is an image from nasaimages.org - an archive of many years of collected photos. Unfortunately not hi-res, but these images are rights free as long as you cite NASA and don't imply that they promote whatever you're selling.  At the very least, they're inspirational. They can also make you feel really insignificant. The image above is also strangely phallic. Moving on...

Winter Check

Maybe you saw this on core77, but I thought a lot of us would find Wintercheck an interesting new furniture company. They seem really dedicated and bent on establishing something cool, watch the videos. Only big concern: prices, a little high? But I think they are handcrafted pieces

10:28am/10:28am

An altered piece of clothing to suggest two contrasting adjustments and the possibility of a correlation. The piece can be worn in two fashions; one may wear it as a standard hoodie, or they may wear the altered side. There is no back to the piece, it was designed to incorporate two fronts, creating a dialogue of choices and adjustments.

Motorcycle

A nice blog filled with really nice motorcycles.  Maybe everyone is not a fan of motorcycles, but there is a broad spectrum of design that goes into these.

I find this blog pretty interesting, Its good for seeing random things: often weird, sometimes inspiring and good for exposing oneself to different things, and its usually pretty amusing.

Ebb - Abatement panel

Inspired by cattails, which separate ponds from fields, Ebb is a space divider that creates a quiet and visually secluded personal space in a public environment. The name EBB relates to the ebbing and flowing of tides, which is an analogy for the sound waves that it abates. The geometric shape of the tops divert sound waves, while the soft woolen outer absorbs sound and vibration. These tops are supported by fiberglass rods, which are inserted to a cement base. Each base has a slight curve in it, allowing them to form different patterns ranging from circles, waves or clusters. The plastic tops and fiberglass rods can be colored to collaborate with various environments or signify its presence.
Its mass of individual rods allows people to break the barrier by looking through the cattails to see what is beyond, providing security of not being trapped behind the barrier. Its placement in public spaces can be interpreted for different situations, like separating customers at a bank teller, around an ATM, in a library and functioning as a corral, so people can feel comfortable and confident while engaging in confidential activities.

My Granite phone concept

I wrote an article on productdesignhub.com about a phone that I designed during my time with Fitch. The article covers the process I went through to get to the final design, as well as what I learned from the experience.

http://www.notcot.org/

A coworker introduced me to these sites some time ago. I find it to be a great source for the latest trends and inspiration. There are many articles about current events and coverage of shows like ICFF. Plus, if you click the sides, you can see some of Kimberly Wu's hot car sketches.

Enjoy!

Color Me Cleveland

Alright...I guess this is a good place to post this. I will be taking part in the upcoming Color Me Cleveland weekend, a benefit for the Artists Archives of the Western Reserve. I will be spending Saturday June 2oth at Edgewater Park shooting wet plate collodion photographs. Stop by, say "hi" and get your portrait taken....

Thanks_ Greg Martin

Color Me Cleveland is "an event to create artwork in an open-air environment" and is being put on by the Artists Archives of Western Reserve and this organization is putting on the fundraiser in order to raise money for the foundation. The event was actually inspired by an event done by the Copley Society for Art in Boston, Massachusetts called "Fresh Paint." There are over 40 artists who take part in this event and they are placed all throughout the Cleveland metropolitan area. The outdoor part of the event will take place on June 19th/20th/21st (Friday/Saturday/Sunday) The artists works will be brought back to the AAWR's gallery space, "wet", where they will be installed and hung up for a week long viewing and silent auction. The final part of the event is the closing party, the Sold! gala on Friday June 26th, where the artists, attendees and the winners of the silent auction get to celebrate. Artists will be located in a variety of locations

(see http://www.artistsarchives.org/ for more specific info).
