A Lesson In Transitioning Service Retail from Online to Physical Space
Mission Bicycle Company
Retail Experience by Adaptive Path
Architecture by Grayscaled Design Collective
Web Design by Chapter Three
Rarely do I see such a seamless transition from the online to the in-store retail experience.Mission Bicycle is a custom fix-gear bicycle shop located on Valencia Street in San Francisco.
Website design by Chapter Three "I had already heard about Mission Bicycle’s innovative model of selling fixed gear bikes online and was intrigued to hear about the company’s next step: opening up a retail shop that would challenge pretty much every convention in bicycle retail. What Mission Bicycle wanted to do was exactly in line with a few ideas that I had with some friends while in grad school"- Henning Fischer of Adaptive Path.
"Mission Bicycle's Zack Rosen, CEO partnered with Grayscaled to design the interior space and Adaptive Path to develop product selection and purchase experience and signage system. The store opened in May 2009 resulting in a 50%+ net increase in bicycle sales for the company"-Henning Fischer.
Mission Bicycle Retail Experience from Adaptive Path on Vimeo.
I highly recommend taking a look at the three company's that partnered to make Mission Bike brand experience. Adaptive Path designs consumer experiences for a variety of products and services, not to mention their experience designers produce great design literature and essay's most of which are free through their blog. Chapter Three is a full-service open-source consultancy and experts at designing great websites and deploying them. - from their webpage here.

Peter B Lewis gets a razzin'

Quoted from James Howard Kunstler's 'Eyesore of the Month'
The Peter B. Lewis Building for Case Western Reserve University's Weatherhead School of Management. Architect: Frank Gehry. If your dog had a tumor like this the vets would just shake their heads and put him to sleep. The design follows the logic of cancer: invade and overwhelm the host organism. It's appropriate that this building houses the business school, because it aptly expresses the disfigurement of American economic practice in our time: banality meets pathology in a tragic duet.

band-aid

Not only is this very cool packaging/design/(amazing)idea, check out the sweet blogspot site it is on. In case you only look, read this bit from the explanation:
"By redesigning the traditional bad-aid into a roll-type like tapes, we can not only reduce the paper waste but also reduce the volume of the traditional package by two thirds, saving transportation cost."
It's translated, so take it easy.

Compass in Hand: Selections from The Judith Rothschild Foundation Contemporary Drawings Collection
Compass in Hand

comprised of nine digital images of disasters taken from mass media. The images are arranged in a grid and superimposed with a constellation of circles made by the artist. Walker stipulates that the images can be reproduced and disseminated as often as desired and on any variety of materials. In consultation with the artist, the work was reproduced as wallpaper for the exhibition Compass in Hand—and it’s also available as a free download.

The Judith Rothschild Foundation Contemporary Drawings Collection, acquired by the Museum in 2005, is an extraordinary collection of over 2,500 contemporary works on paper. Through a selection of more than three hundred works, this first comprehensive presentation of the gift surveys the various methods and materials within the styles of gestural and geometric abstraction, representation and figuration, and systems-based and conceptual drawings. The exhibition brings together historical works by Lee Bontecou and Joseph Beuys; Minimalist and Conceptual works by Donald Judd and Hanne Darboven; detailed narrative drawings by Elizabeth Peyton and John Currin; collages by Amelie von Wulffen, Mona Hatoum, Lucy McKenzie and Paulina Olowska; and large-scale installations by Nate Lowman and Ján Mancuska, to name just a few. In its exploration of diverse artistic tendencies at the turn of the twenty-first century, this exhibition proudly celebrates the panoramic state of drawing today.

Hey, I'm working on a wordless blog site right now, basically images that are cool/inspiring/weird/etc. for you people to scroll through and be mesmerized by. It's heavily based off of Haw-Lin.com, but mine will probably be more design oriented. Its called Things_I_Take. Blurp it, or let me know what you think.

Mike and Maaike's ATNMBL

For those of you who are unfamiliar with it, what we're talking about here is the ATNMBL, a recent transportation concept from the studio of Mike and Maaike in San Francisco. What it promises is nothing short of the end of the driving experience. No more traffic jams, no more eating, talking / texting, no more reading or doing your nails while trying to drive, no more putting your life on hold so you can get to where you're going.
I've seen this concept making the rounds for a few weeks now, and I hadn't honestly given it too much thought until I saw it on Core77 yesterday and began reading the comments section. What struck me was the sheer volume of comments (many Core77 posts get very few if any posts as far as I can see) It is clear from the reaction (among the design community no less) that this is a polarizing concept. Many comments were simply criticizing its lack of feasibility (airbags, etc.).
Personally, I think the concept is extremely well presented. I have no issue with showing an idea that is unfeasible as a concept; its value and role as a catalyst is invaluable.
What I'm most interested in is how you guys feel about a driverless transportation system! Personally, I love driving, but I absolutely hate all of the things that Mike and Maaike identified that go along with driving in built up urban areas. I could see a future in which such a system becomes more mainstream and the personal automobile becomes a pastime or a hobby, much as what happened to the horse when cars first came about. What are your thoughts?

Great ad campaign
Pretty amazing ad campaign for a suppressed Zimbabwean newspaper. The journalists were exiled by the government regime and a tax was put on the paper making it unfordable to the citizens. The campaign raised awareness around the globe to spread the word of the oppressive regime and the shittiness of their situation. Great video here.

Sir Ken Robinson gives commencement speech at RISD

Many of you may have seen this on Core77, but if you haven't done so yet, check out this video. British author Ken Robinson spoke at the Rhode Island School of Design's commencement this year, and delivered what I thought was a truly inspiring speech. It's a bit long, but stick through the first 2-3 minutes of introductions and watch his address, you won't regret it - it might just be enough to keep your head up for another day through your job search!

Amazing Image Archive from NASA

The Horsehead Nebula - courtesy of nasaimages.org
The above is an image from nasaimages.org - an archive of many years of collected photos. Unfortunately not hi-res, but these images are rights free as long as you cite NASA and don't imply that they promote whatever you're selling. At the very least, they're inspirational. They can also make you feel really insignificant. The image above is also strangely phallic. Moving on...

An altered piece of clothing to suggest two contrasting adjustments and the possibility of a correlation. The piece can be worn in two fashions; one may wear it as a standard hoodie, or they may wear the altered side. There is no back to the piece, it was designed to incorporate two fronts, creating a dialogue of choices and adjustments.Title:: 10:28am/10:28am
